#3: Summer of Soul

Summer of Soul tells the story of the 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival which happened alongside Woodstock. Legendary performers included B.B. King, Stevie Wonder, Nina Simone, Gladys Knight and the Pips, and more. Over 300,000 festival goers gathered to celebrate amidst watershed moments in history from the civil rights movement to the moon landing.

Despite its undeniable power and lasting influence, the Harlem Cultural Festival’s remarkable story was hidden, locked away in a dusty archive. Until now. Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson presents this landmark documentary which won the grand prize and audience award at Sundance. It’s nominated for best documentary in tonight’s Academy Awards.

#4: The Bachelor

The Bachelor format is tired and problematic, getting stale as the years wear on. And yet many people still tune in. This season’s “leading man” was seen as boring by the passionate fanbase (they weren’t wrong). The strong women selected for the program stole the show. If you want to scratch the itch without wasting time, skip ahead and just watch the wild “The Women Tell All” episode (9) on Hulu.

#5: The Courtship

The Courtship offers a new spin on the dating show format: it’s The Bachelor meets Bridgerton set in our present day. It’s not perfect, but it’s very watchable for fans of the genre. Watch on Peacock.
